Light drops of rain are coming down as I hike to the top of Spencer’s Butte. I take a deep breath and enjoy watching the clouds move over Eugene’s cityscape.
For a few weeks now, I have been hiking up the butte before work. Yes, butte before breakfast! I never really thought of doing such a thing, until one day my friend invited me to join him.
I am surprised to see all sorts of people there that early. A woman and her baby. A couple running. A man with walking sticks. We smile and say hi as we pass each other and continue on with our day.
Lately I’ve been caught up in the swirl of life where it occurs like life is “happening” to me. I have too much to do! I don’t like how I’m being treated! And on and on and on.
This view of life is temporary and not the “truth.” With each step up the mountain, I let go of fear, judgment, and blame.
There I am, at the highest point in Eugene, and I create joy and forgiveness instead.
The sun starts to peak out from behind the clouds. As I’m about to head down the butte, I am overjoyed as I see a beautiful rainbow across the western sky.
Smiling, I know that I’m exactly where I need to be.
